There are 15 national holidays determined by law. When a holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday substitutes for the holiday.
Jan.1st : New Year's Day
  Many offices are closed from December 29 through January 4.
 
Jan.8th : Coming-of-Age Day
  A day to celebrate the coming of age of the youths who have attained the age of twenty. (It was decided that the second monday should be holiday from 2000 by law)
 
Feb.11th : National Foundation Day
  The day of the first Emperor Jinmu's enthronement, as written in the Nihon Shoki.
 
Mar.20th : Vernal Equinox Day
  A day when the sun passes the vernal equinox. It is a day to celebrate nature and living things.
 
Apr.29th : Greenery Day
  The late Emperor Showa's birthday. After his death, it was designated as a day for preserving Japan's greenery.
 
May.3rd : Constitution Day
  A day to commemorate the enactment of the Constitution of Japan in 1947.
 
May.4th : National Holiday
  It was decided that this day should be a national holiday because it is between May 3rd and May 5th.
 
Mar.5th : Children's Day
  A day to wish for the health and happiness of children. Carp-shaped streamers are flown on this day.
 
Jul.20th : Marine Day
  A day to thank the sea for its blessings.
 
Sep.15th : Respect-for-the-Aged Day
  A day to show respect to the elderly, enacted in 1966.
 
Sep.23rd : Autumnal Equinox Day
  The day when the sun passes the autumnal equinox. It is a day to remember the dead and show respect to one's ancestors.
 
Oct.8th : Health-Sports Day
  Enacted in 1966 in commemoration of the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, it is a day to promote health. (It was decided that the second monday should be holiday from 2000 by law)
 
Nov.3rd : Culture Day
  A day promote culture prosperity of Japan, enacted in commemoration of the day when the Constitution of Japan was promulgated in 1946.
 
Nov.23rd : Labor Thanksgiving Day
  A day to appreciate labor and to celebrate a good harvest.
 
Dec.23rd : The Emperor's Birthday
  The current Emperor's birthday. It will be celebrated while the Emperor is alive.
