Police officers surrounded a house on the 900 block of Elsinore Drive on Monday afternoon after Alvarado allegedly fled from officers, jumped fences and slipped inside the home through an open sliding glass door, said Sgt. , a police spokesman.
Inside he came face-to-face with a caretaker who was tending to the elderly homeowner, a woman in her 90s, who was asleep in the bedroom, Philip said.
The caretaker fled immediately, leaving the sleeping woman inside, and was met by police who were in the process of surrounding the home. Officers began yelling into the house, encouraging Alvarado to surrender. The noise woke up the homeowner, who went outside and was met by police without seeing Alvarado, Philip said.
Eventually, a SWAT team went into the house and found Alvarado hiding on top of a water heater in a closet. After refusing to obey officer鈥 commands to surrender, a police dog bit Alvarado and he was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries and arrested around 5:25 p.m., Philips said.
Alvarado was allegedly in possession of a number of items that were stolen from an apartment complex earlier in the day, Philips said.
Alvarado was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of trespassing, resisting arrest, prowling, possession of stolen property and petty theft.
