@@@ Will Harris, a 30-year-old righty reliever, was claimed off waivers from the maillot de chelsea fc Diamondbacks during the offseason. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning Tuesday, lowering his spring ERA to 3.38 in a rebound from his prior outing, when he allowed a pair of earned runs to the Yankees in a rough ninth inning for him and the Astros鈥?defense.
Harris was born in Harris County but moved to Louisiana at a young age. He has a lifetime 4.26 ERA and is a darkhorse to win the Astros鈥?long relief job, but there is a window of opportunity for him to crack the MLB roster this season.
鈥hen Will Harris gets strike one and he gets that breaking ball over, he鈥 got plus pitches and his ball moves,鈥?manager A.J. Hinch said. 鈥hen he falls behind he runs into trouble which is not uncommon for pitchers.鈥? Harris has switched clubs before, and said that being put on waivers and claimed this winter wasn鈥檛 a surprise because of his past experiences. He鈥 had success in the big leagues with a very impressive strikeout rate of 9.7 per nine innings, and a walk rate of just 2.7 per nine innings.
When asked if he wondered at times why he hasn鈥檛 been able to stick despite some success, he said his family鈥 asked that question more than he has. Harris has played for two big leagues teams in three seasons, the Rockies in 2012 and the Diamondbacks the last two years.
鈥鈥 just going to try to do my job and if you continue to do your job it鈥l eventually work out for you,鈥?Harris said.
Hinch wants to lengthen Harris out as spring training winds down.
